It makes sense that she would build a nice new boys room in the finished part of the basement, while fully intending to isolate Collin in the unfinished portion. That way nobody on the film crew would question why Collin always came up from the basement to film the show.

I watched that show and bought her first book. The younger kids were just a little older than my youngest child. Then the divorce came and I saw something different in her. I think it was always there but kept slightly in check by Jon. With him gone her need for total control was no longer kept in a world of reality. I am honestly surprised she has a relationship with any of her kids. Collin got the worst of her but all of the kids were to some degree treated cruelly.

People really don’t seem to understand how impossible of a situation Kate Gosselin was in. She has repeatedly stated that Collin’s behavior had completely spiraled out of control, not just at home but even towards school teachers. As a mother, she had seven other children in that house to protect on a daily basis. When a child is exhibiting severe behavioral crises, using a designated safe space/sensory room under medical guidance is a tool to prevent tragedy and keep everyone safe before an unavoidable hospitalization. She had an entire family's safety riding on her shoulders, and people are way too quick to judge a mother trying to protect her kids from a dangerous situation.
