To be clear, I’m all for protecting turtles. I just find it fascinating that, once again, local communities face restrictions on a traditional, nourishing source of food, while the industrial food machine continues to cause enormous damage to the very species we’re trying to protect. These communities have harvested turtle eggs for generations, long before industrial fishing expanded. And while we can’t say turtle populations were perfectly stable throughout that time, the expansion of commercial fishing introduced an enormous new threat. Not to mention the generations of traditional knowledge we risk losing in the process. 🐢 For generations, Costa Rican communities have harvested turtle eggs for food. But look at what happened when industrial fishing expanded. 🌿 Early 1900s: Turtle egg harvesting was already established in Costa Rica. Traditional food, gathered locally. 🎣 1940s–1960s: Industrial tuna fishing expanded dramatically to supply a growing global market. 📉 Since the 1980s: Eastern Pacific leatherback turtle populations have declined by more than 97%. 🐢 Year 2000: Scientists estimated that commercial longline fishing caught over 250,000 loggerhead and leatherback turtles in a single year. 🌱 Meanwhile, in Ostional, Costa Rica: Since 1987, local people have legally harvested turtle eggs under a regulated conservation programme, demonstrating that food harvesting and wildlife protection can coexist. Of course, excessive egg harvesting has also harmed turtle populations. But industrial fishing bycatch remains one of their greatest threats. So why do we question what small communities take from nature, but so readily accept the destruction caused by the industries feeding our supermarkets? Perhaps conservation should be about learning to live alongside nature, rather than disconnecting ourselves from it. 🌍 Protect nature. Protect traditional food systems.
