@alihapvld70: "STOP! DON'T GET ON THAT BIKE!" my three-year-old daughter screamed, planting herself between Vincent Mercer and his black Harley. A dozen Iron Wolves went silent as Mia pointed beneath the motorcycle and whispered, "That's where the man put the black thing." For a second, I couldn't move. I had been cleaning the Iron Wolves clubhouse and the property behind it for eight months. Mia and I lived in the small apartment behind the building, and I knew enough about Vincent to understand how strange this moment was. He was the club president, the man everyone watched before they spoke. Nobody blocked his way. Nobody except my daughter. Vincent stood in black jeans, heavy boots, and a leather vest covered in club patches. He could have dismissed her as a frightened child. Instead, he stopped several feet from the Harley and slowly crouched until he was level with her. "Why not, sweetheart?" Mia lifted one shaking finger. "The man." Dominic Hayes, Vincent's road captain, glanced toward the motorcycles outside. "What man?" Vincent asked. "The man under your bike." Frank, one of the members near the bar, let out an uneasy laugh. "She's three, Prez. Kids dream about crazy stuff." Vincent didn't even turn toward him. "When did you see him, Mia?" "At dark." She pointed toward our apartment, and a memory I had brushed aside came back so sharply that my stomach tightened. Three nights earlier, a brutal thunderstorm had rolled across northern Illinois. Sometime after midnight, I woke and found Mia standing at her bedroom window. Rain hammered the glass while lightning flashed beyond the clubhouse garage. I thought she was watching the storm. Now Vincent asked, "What was the man doing?" Before I could stop her, Mia dropped to her hands and knees on the clubhouse floor. She crawled a few inches, then stretched one arm beneath an imaginary motorcycle. "He had a little light." Dominic's expression changed. His hand drifted toward the radio clipped to his belt. Vincent's voice became almost unnervingly calm. "What happened next?" Mia pinched her fingers together as though holding something small. "He put a black thing underneath." The room seemed to lose all its air. Frank stopped smiling. I rushed forward, lifted Mia into my arms, and held her against my chest. Her heart was beating hard enough for me to feel it through her shirt. "Vincent, maybe we should call the police." He stood so fast I flinched. Outside, his Harley was exactly where he had left it. He was supposed to ride downtown with several club members in less than five minutes, and the engine hadn't been started yet. One biker instinctively took a step toward the motorcycle. "DON'T TOUCH IT." Vincent's voice cracked through the clubhouse. The man froze immediately. Dominic began moving everyone away from the parking area while Mia buried her face against my neck. Vincent stepped outside, but he stopped several yards from the bike. His eyes moved from the Harley to the garage, then slowly across every man wearing an Iron Wolves patch. That was when the fear in me changed shape. Vincent wasn't only thinking about what might be under his motorcycle. He was thinking about who could have put it there. "Clear the lot," he told Dominic. "Nobody goes near that bike." Then he turned back toward the clubhouse. His gaze traveled across the room and stopped on Frank. Frank had gone pale. Vincent saw it too. He took one slow step toward him. Nobody spoke. All I could hear was Mia's breathing against my shoulder. Then Vincent asked, quietly enough that no one could pretend they hadn't heard him: "Who had access to my garage three nights ago?" Frank's mouth opened. Closed. His hands were shaking. "I did," he whispered. "Prez, I—" Dominic was already on the radio, calling it in. Within twenty minutes, the county bomb squad rolled into the lot, and we all watched from behind the clubhouse windows while a robot on tank treads crawled under Vincent's Harley and pulled out a small magnetic black box. Not a bomb. A GPS tracker. Active. Transmitting. A p
