Akítho, or
Akítho, or "tattoos," are older than America. Ičhágo means "to make a mark," "to score," or "to draw a line," which historically described the act of opening the skin to apply ash or charcoal. Both of these terms are Lakota. Porcupine quills, fish bones, and sharpened bird bones are examples of traditional tattoo tools. Black ink was often made from the ashes of fires, especially of medicinal plants. Powdered rock mixed with fat or water was also used for other colors (Plains Nations). Different cultures around the world have varying methods, techniques, teachings, and materials unique to them. My markings are in traditional placements according to Dakota tradition, but are not repeats of any exact historical design. That is because they tell MY story. As a traditional tattoo artist, I caution against tattooing the exact markings of one's ancestors (as depicted in pictures or paintings) on one's body unless their meanings are fully understood. This is because their markings tell a story that is earned: a personal, cultural, healing, and/or historical story of the person who carries them, and with that understanding comes responsibility. Mine tell my story, and part of that includes being born into world travel and being blessed to visit and share with numerous cultures since I was a child. It has shaped my world view and personality for the better. They also tell the story of how I became a traditional handpoke tattoo artist. The final touch up of my tattoos was done by my own hand in the ancient handpoke tattoo style. It was the last tattoo I did before taking a long hiatus. The lines are still fresh in this picture. It has been an honor to be part of a revitalization and restoration process of a powerful cultural practice that helped many People’s around the world define themselves and their relationship to their relatives and to Earth. I pray for those who still look down upon tattoos like this, aka artistic and cultural storytelling, and I hope they one day ask themselves: What is the true source of my fear? My tattoos tell my unique story. What story do yours tell? #tattoo #History #culture #Indigenous #stories
