A House committee voted Wednesday to compel Attorney General Pam Bondi to testify before lawmakers about how the Justice Department has handled records tied to Jeffrey Epstein. The motion passed after five Republican members joined every Democrat on the committee in backing the subpoena. The proposal was introduced by Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, highlighting growing frustration with Bondi among some members of her own party as controversy surrounding the Epstein documents continues. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the vote. Republicans Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, and Michael Cloud of Texas joined Mace in breaking with GOP leadership on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) had tried to prevent the subpoena from moving forward. He said Bondi’s chief of staff indicated the attorney general would instead provide private briefings to members regarding the department’s handling of the Epstein files. However, lawmakers from both parties have criticized Bondi for what they describe as delays in releasing information connected to the Epstein investigation. Tensions escalated last summer when the Justice Department announced it would not disclose additional materials, prompting backlash and leading an Oversight subcommittee to push for stronger action. Congress later passed legislation in November requiring the DOJ to release all records in its possession related to Epstein. After missing the law’s deadline for publishing the documents, the department said earlier this year that millions of additional pages would remain unreleased. Speaking to reporters after the vote, Mace said the issue centers on transparency. “We’re going to be focusing on real, substantive concerns, including the 65,000 documents the DOJ is still withholding,” she said.#fyp #vir
The U.S. Department of Justice has approved Paramount Skydance’s massive $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, clearing one of the biggest obstacles facing the blockbuster media deal. Federal regulators concluded after an extensive review that the merger is unlikely to reduce competition or harm consumers. The combined company would bring together major entertainment brands, including Warner Bros., CNN, HBO Max, Paramount Pictures, and Paramount+, creating a media giant with an estimated 200 million streaming subscribers. Paramount executives argued the merger would strengthen their ability to compete with industry leaders such as Netflix and other technology-driven entertainment platforms. The DOJ ultimately approved the transaction without requiring asset sales or additional conditions. Despite the federal approval, the deal is not finalized. California Attorney General Rob Bonta is continuing to review the merger and could still pursue legal action. The proposed merger has sparked debate across Hollywood, with supporters claiming it will create a stronger competitor in the streaming era, while critics warn it could lead to job cuts, industry consolidation, and fewer opportunities for creators. The decision follows months of lobbying, negotiations, and a heated battle between major media companies as the future of the entertainment industry hangs in the balance.#fyp #viral
