Today in reading we started a brand new unit on folktales, and I’m actually really excited about this one because folktales are another type of fiction and for some of my students, this is their first time really being exposed to them. We’ve also been working on character traits, which is such a big standard in lower elementary. I honestly wish I had videos like this when I was learning how to teach because I’ve learned that the key to making these concepts stick is making them interactive. Give them a call and response, add movement, give them a physical example and actually model it with them. Today I had my students turn face to face with me so they could move and participate instead of just sitting and listening. I have a lot of students in my class, so during this part I stay in one spot and model with them. When I’m actually reading the book, that’s when I’m walking around and checking for understanding. And don’t forget your anchor charts! Having one for character traits and one for folktales gives students something they can refer back to throughout the unit. I really hope more teacher content like this helps someone who is still figuring out how to make these lessons engaging because I know I would have loved having this when I first started teaching. 🤎 #TeacherTok #TeachersOfTikTok #ElementaryTeacher #FirstGradeTeacher #TeachingTips

That heavy, half-awake feeling right after your alarm is a real, measurable state — psychologists call it sleep inertia, and hitting the snooze button is a reliable way to make it worse. Sleep inertia is the groggy transition period between sleeping and being fully awake, and research shows it's most severe when you wake up out of deep, slow-wave sleep (Tassi & Muzet, 2000). When the alarm rings and you drift back off, your brain starts settling toward those deeper stages again — and when the alarm rings a few minutes later, you can end up waking from deeper sleep than the first time. Meanwhile, the sleepiness chemical adenosine, which builds up while you're awake and clears out while you sleep (Porkka-Heiskanen et al., 1997), hasn't finished clearing. The scale of it is not small: a 2006 JAMA study found that cognitive impairment right after waking can be worse than the effects of 26 hours without sleep (Wertz et al., 2006). And a 2023 Stockholm University study on habitual snoozers linked the habit to a stronger morning cortisol spike on real-life mornings. The fix is mechanical, not motivational: put the alarm across the room so standing up isn't optional, drink water, and get direct daylight into your eyes — light is the strongest signal for shutting down melatonin and starting real alertness. Follow for more psychology that actually helps. #psychology #learnontiktok #explained #sleep
