Honestly depends on what you’re looking for. Sadly the percentage of black students at uva is only declining. It was personally a big adjustment for me who grew surrounded by minorities. Everyone’s friendly and open to talking especially your first year. Friendships can be hard but not impossible. Joining CIOs (student clubs/orgs) and being open to trying new things like studying with a stranger makes it easier. There are a lot of micro aggressions and usually subtle racism (not always subtle). The university has a very racist history that often gets covered up. But I 100% recommend being proactive on learning it, as it shapes your view at the university especially as a student. Some days are harder than others, but always keep your chin up.

it can be a bit difficult trying to connect with other black students since we’re really small in numbers, but once you find your crew you’re hoenstly set. it’s a matter of understanding where you’re wanted and going where you’re appreciate which uva can make difficult at times, but there’s lots of ways to overcome it!

I loved it and was able to find my people very quickly! The black community isn’t that large but it is strong.

I think if you’re looking for a school that’s surrounded by Black culture then UVA is not the place. However, At UVA there’s different Black organizations that do allow you to meet different people and form communities, and that’s been one of the benefits since i got here. There are programs, like OAAA peer advising that has been around for 50 years, to help Black students form relationships. Over all, it’s based on what you want and putting yourself out there!

I had a great experience! I graduated this year and although the diversity is declining a bit in general, there’s still lots of opportunity to meet people. the black student alliance is very active and well-run! there’s lots of events always going on, and there’s tons of clubs for different ethnicities as well (like soulaan student union, Afro-Latinx student org, etc). theres also clubs like crave (modeling) that aren’t technically black orgs, but there’s lots of diversity. it’s def not anywhere close to an hbcu experience, but I do think students do a great job of creating community here!

It’s fine. It’s isolating at times but there is def black organizations to get involved in on grounds but you have to be proactive. Just fully expect to be the only black student in majority of your classes. You might have 5 max in a classroom out of like 50

I transferred to uva from an hbcu my second year so obviously it was a bit of a culture shock but acknowledging uva’s history and its current relationship to the community around it was important. Rn there is a huge issue with expensive apartments displacing the historically black surrounding communities and uva is truly handling it poorly. Some majors like Econ, engineering, McIntyre you’ll be the minority but clubs and orgs around your major can help you feel more at home. I was also in white Greek life and loved my sorority but I know it’s definitely not for everyone.

So far I like it , it obviously has its ups and downs. I would say join different organizations even when it feels awkward. From a fourth year student 😊
