@chelseygoodan: When a girl is told to be "realistic," she doesn't give up her dreams all at once. She trades one habit for another. 1️⃣ Stops: saying her big goals out loud Starts: keeping them where nobody can call them "unlikely" 2️⃣ Stops: raising her hand with the wild idea Starts: waiting for a "safer" one 3️⃣ Stops: signing up for things she might not win Starts: entering only what she's sure of 4️⃣ Stops: telling people what she wants to be Starts: giving whatever answer sounds sensible 5️⃣ Stops: doing projects just because they excite her Starts: asking if it's "worth it" for a college application 6️⃣ Stops: imagining how things could be different Starts: accepting what's broken as normal 7️⃣ Stops: asking "why not?" Starts: worrying about being called "difficult" 8️⃣ Stops: believing her ideas are worth hearing Starts: keeping them to herself and calling it "being realistic" 9️⃣ Stops: picturing herself as a leader Starts: waiting for someone else to lead Number 9 should worry us most. A girl who can't picture it won't go looking for the room where it happens. After 18 years of working with teenage girls, I know how early girls learn to make their dreams smaller. I also know how fast those dreams come back when someone takes her seriously. We are changing that story inside The Teenage Girl Cabal. It is a secret society of changemakers where I personally mentor and support our future leaders, so a girl gets to be exactly who she wants to be, surrounded by a community that loves her for it.
