One of several hundred inmates released early from prison on Tuesday has detailed what impact prison overcrowding has on inmates, as he extended his thanks to Andy Burnham for getting him home sooner.   Speaking from outside HMP Fosse Way in Leicestershire, Dale, who jailed for armed robbery and declined to give his surname, painted a grim picture of life behind bars.  “It's now full of drugs. It's now full of phones. The lads are, like, kind of getting out of control”, he said. While happy to be released early, Dale said prisons do work when the population is properly managed, saying: “It’s robust. As long as they can keep up with the shortfalls and not allow it to fill up, like it has done, it will work”. Dale was supposed to serve 12 months at the prison, but was today released after 10 months through the early-release scheme. He said, “I’m off to a probation hospital for six months, and then I'm off to live with my partner”, adding that “I won’t be going back inside. Not this time.” Around 650 prisoners serving sentences between one-and-a-half and two-and-a-half years were expected to be released today.  It is the second set of releases under changes brought in by the Sentencing Act, which will see around 5,000 prisoners scheduled to leave prison in batches over the next year - before their sentences were due to end. The figure is down from 6,000, after ministers intervened to exempt rapists and the most serious child sex offenders from the scheme after outrage over the potential early release of two of the men jailed over the killing of PC Harper in Berkshire in 2019.   Tuesday’s release follows the release of around 700 inmates on 1 October.   Michael Bogle was one of the inmates released then and is already back behind bars. The 38-year-old was arrested and jailed again within days after stealing £100 worth of detergent from supermarkets in north London.
