Michael C. Hall Explains Why Dexter Was “the Last Thing” He Wanted to Do When He First Got the Script Michael C. Hall has played Dexter Morgan for 20 years. But he says he almost didn’t want the job. Hall told Entertainment Weekly that he had just finished Six Feet Under. He was not eager to sign up for another series. “The last thing” he wanted to do was another one, he said. What changed his mind? “It was the audacity of the Dexter premise,” he explained. Even then, he did not expect it to last. “I felt like we were onto something, but I didn’t think the ride would have the longevity or twists and turns,” he said. “Anything beyond the pilot getting picked up was gravy.” The show’s future was not certain at first. The pilot failed to meet Showtime’s expectations. Showrunner Clyde Phillips was brought in to rework it. Dexter premiered in 2006 and ran for eight seasons. Hall returned in Dexter: New Blood in 2021 and later in Dexter: Resurrection. He told PEOPLE the character still surprises him. “It’s been an amazing run,” he said. Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection is filmed in New York City, where Hall went to grad school at NYU. “It’s like living a dream,” he said. The season premiered Friday, Oct. 30, on Paramount+.
