The average is most definitely NOT a range. Average or a mean is an exact number derived by adding up all your data and then dividing it by the number of data points. Standard deviations are used specifically in bell curves which are a visual way of arranging data on graph to explain how far away something is from the average. Literally by its definition a standard deviation cannot be an average and it must refer to a single data point not a range.

The average is an absolute number i.e. the mean, not a range. SD is is a measure of range, 1 SD is a range from the mean. You are confusing the definition of average mathmatically (mean) and average colloquially (typical).
