#homless #help #lawrence #tent Hi everyone, as of today we are now being fined $1200 per day unless we remove the tent that we have safely placed on our property at House of Mercy. We want to help but this is a steep fine being imposed on us from the head of inspectional services for the City Of Lawrence, Pat Ruiz. We are looking for contributions to help toward this effort. Thank you! WHERE ARE THE UNSHELTERED SUPPOSED TO GO? If our “tent community” is shut down, where are these people supposed to go? These are human beings living in our community (most of whom native to Lawrence) who have nowhere safe to sleep and no place to turn. House of Mercy is attempting to do something about a problem that does not disappear simply because we close our eyes to it. This tent community is an ambitious experiment. It is not a perfect solution, and we know there are challenges. We are already seeing people take responsibility and pride in their surroundings. They are cleaning the area! People deserve the opportunity to contribute, to be respected, and to be part of a community. We are trying to improve public safety by limiting the area, providing vital healthcare and food, and added sanitation (with the porta potties we have added and a large dumpster). If this effort is shut down, where will these individuals sleep tonight? Will they return to public parks, sidewalks, doorways, and other places where they have no access to basic necessities? Homelessness does not end because a tent comes down. House of Mercy is trying to address a difficult problem with limited resources and an enormous amount of heart. These are our neighbors. They are people, not problems to be moved from one location to another. House of Mercy has the courage to try something different. Will you help us? We are asking for your support in this effort…. ##pleasegoviral
