Most play mats are foam (EVA, PU or TPU) or PVC/vinyl, which are all plastic. And your baby is on it for hours…tummy time, rolling, drooling, mouthing, face down every single day 👀 Foam and vinyl can contain additives (sometimes even flame retardants, which play mats aren’t required to have), and they can shed or break down with wear. If you have to go foam, look for TPU. Unlike PVC it has no chlorine and doesn’t need phthalates to stay soft. It’s still plastic, just a better pick. I’m nowhere near perfect or super picky here. It’s impossible to avoid all plastic with a baby. Go for organic cotton or wool when you can, skip PVC and vinyl, and if it’s foam look for no PVC or EVA plus real safety testing.
