**Update from last post (this is not the same mother and calf) they said they responded to reports a couple weeks ago and made a couple cuts but the calf is still entangled so please be on the look out and report right away. Whale entanglement and other marine species entanglement is on the rise due to a growing demand for seafood and few regulations and a lack of accountability for lost gear. Because whales are relatively large animals sometimes they are able to continue swimming with the entanglement for sometime, bringing it to the surface and subsequently sometimes our attention. It is important to realize this is becoming more common and many smaller marine animals (I see sharks in tangled and suffering all the time) unfortunately grow, suffocate, suffer and die out of sight. While video’s like the one I was sent yesterday are heartbreaking it is important to share them to help people become aware of the impacts of the industrial fishing industry and to help the wonderful community be more aware to look out and communicate to help the whale out. It is frustrating hearing about delayed responses or somedays no responses asking to help assist entangled individuals and it’s unfortunate that programs for rescue efforts are not bigger (should be funded by the industrial seafood industry right?) The best we can do is try to keep an eye out, communicate, assist, where we are allowed to (I am happy to dive in and confident I could help if allowed) and possibly even more importantly, push for better regulation on this lost or discarded fishing gear, so it doesn’t continue to wastefully kill. making this post quickly as I head offshore before sunrise and will be keeping an eye out ❤️🦈🐋 with @oneoceandiving Video I filmed on my GoPro in the South Pacific #sharkid_clare
