In March 2018, only about 10 days before he died on March 14, Stephen Hawking submitted one of his last scientific papers. It was titled "A Smooth Exit from Eternal Inflation?" and was written with his longtime collaborator Thomas Hertog of KU Leuven in Belgium. It was later published in the Journal of High Energy Physics, and it tackled one of the biggest questions in cosmology: is our universe the only one? The background is a theory called eternal inflation. It suggests that after the Big Bang, space kept expanding at an enormous rate in some regions, and each time it stopped, it formed a "bubble" universe, with our universe being one of them. The result would be an endless multiverse, with countless universes, each with different laws of physics. Many physicists find this idea hard to accept, because it can't be tested and it predicts almost anything. Hawking and Hertog proposed a way to tame it. Using ideas from string theory and holography, they argued that the multiverse would be much simpler and smaller than expected. Instead of an infinite variety of wildly different universes, they suggested there would be a limited number, all fairly similar to our own. That would make the theory more predictable and give scientists something to test. The key could be gravitational waves, ripples in space that were produced right after the Big Bang. The paper says that faint signals from that era could carry clues about the multiverse, and might be picked up by future space-based detectors. One example is the planned LISA mission, which is expected to launch in the mid-2030s. It is important to be clear about what the paper does and does not show. It did not find parallel universes, and it is only a theoretical proposal that has not been confirmed. But it showed that, even at the end of his life, Hawking was working to turn a big idea into something that science could one day check.#fyppppppppppppppppppppppp #trending #Science #Seismology #Cosmos
