Phones that rely on the internet don’t work when there’s a power cut - mobile signals aren’t always good- old fashioned system of landlines that will be turned off soon still work - not sure in the sense of getting rid of them. Newer technology is not always better.

Just to point out that people with EVs that have V2L mode (or similar) can run household essentials for days - things like fridges, lamps, heaters etc. They're just giant batteries on wheels.

Perhaps not everything should be connected to the internet and to the electric grid, also perhaps the grid should be able to have reliable local emergency service unconnected to the rest of it!

My parents were stuck in Spain when the power went out, they thought the world was ending and that it had happened everywhere, they panicked really badly, no signal, couldn’t contact us, no wifi, no lights, couldn’t fly home, no access to money on their card, no way of taking out physical cash. Meanwhile I was watching it on the news like oh that’s why they’ve not said anything, alright and just carried on with my day 😂
