@oh.happy.day08: Nearly 3,000 pounds of wildflower and grass seed, every bit of it picked by hand. That was one season's work for the crew and volunteers at Nachusa Grasslands in northern Illinois. They'd been at it since 1986, when The Nature Conservancy bought the first 400 acres of old farm fields near Dixon. Field by field they seeded the prairie back, sometimes with more than 180 kinds of plants in a single planting. In October 2014, 30 bison from the Wind Cave herd in South Dakota stepped out onto 1,500 acres of prairie. This was Illinois's first conservation herd. Wild bison hadn't roamed the state since the early 1800s, and the first calves came the next April. The herd now runs about 100. Would you drive out to see bison grazing on an Illinois prairie?
