@bookwh0re23: What happens when performative activism replaces real world advocacy? You get people policing books instead of protecting community autonomy. As someone who works in the clinical services, I’m over the online cosplay and narrow standards. Being pro Black means supporting Black women, men, and children in their full individuality, period ! 💅🏾✊🏾 #BookTok #BlackTikTok #blackidentity #blackbooks #booktokcommunityfyp

I’m not sure how openly choosing not to support someone who has caused harm to our community equates to being insecure in our Blackness. And reducing it to “just a paperback book” dismisses the fact that books, the people who write them, and the financial support we give them shape so much more than the fiction they write and the narrative they are spreading. Criticism of those choices isn't policing Blackness. Sometimes it's simply holding people accountable

It seems like you’re just trying to make excuses to feel better about reading and platforming her books. Majority of black booktok stands against support of this author and there’s a reason for that. Calling that performative because it doesn’t fit your narrative is wild. Post aside, her books contain racist and stereotypical themes, so harm has been done whether you agree to acknowledge it or not.

This is giving me flashbacks to my childhood. It really hurt when people, including my own mom, would claim I act "white." Turns out I'm just being my authentic self. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I’m not even in booktok but I see this happening every community. It’s like we as Black people are not allowed to make our own decisions. I just want Black people to know you can decide for yourself who you’re going to support what you’re going to read what you’re going to listen to what you’re going to watch you do not need anyone else to validate that for you and if somebody chooses the opposite, you’re allowed to still have your choice and keep it moving.

I mean you could just not publicize your support for her? If you publicize something people have every reason to critique you

Sure but being pro black doesn’t mean blindly supporting black folks. There’s no period. Support with discernment and critical thinking. Not all skinfolk are kinfolk

Hey girl hey, I think your statement that it illustrates insecurity in one’s Black identity is a very broad generalized statement that doesn’t apply to everyone, and statements like this aren’t helpful to this overall discussion (that at this point needs to be done already) and are actually just as harmful and destructive. People are allowed to have a boundary and some people do enforce that in extreme ways that might isolate others, but that’s their prerogative. If you’re upset with people questioning one’s Blackness based on the books you read, you can’t turn around and then publicly question their security in their identity, especially with lack of evidence. I don’t think this is helping at all, and at this point adding to fuel to the fire is more counterproductive than just letting this all fizzle out.

This feels like the lady who said YT people are afraid to read Black books because "it feels like the hood" and stood ten toes down when people told her her position was very anti-black as well as told people "y'all in the comments are the ones I'm talkin about". Okay 👍🏾 At the end of the day:: read what you want but recognize that by defending certain reads & platforming the authors work, etc. you're basically complicit in what that author did. Also:: A person doesn't need boots to the ground social work under their belt to be validated in their emotional harm and experiences and to recognize harm done to marginalized communities and using your social work to invalidate their feelings and experiences is just bad social work.
