I never declare anything because I’ve never bought more than $500 in goods when traveling abroad so I don’t bother doing VAT refund. I’m fine with the country I visited using my taxes paid for their infrastructure and social programs.

Honestly it’s ridiculous how much we are taxed on.

Tied to passport, she did a VAT refund which is tied to your passport. 100% always declare. Once you lose global entry, you can’t get it back ever.

I once declared a single beer and the boarder control guy was like “you know I could tax you for this right???” And I was like “yes, that is why I declared it.” So odd.

The VAT refund and you are flagged when you spend that much

Bought a watch for 8k in Japan - when I arrived at JFK no one was being pulled aside, so I actively searched for a customs agent and asked if I could declare stuff, he quickly asked me what I had and just said it’s fine and thanks for saying something and passed me through. Lol

She probably requested a VAT refund at the airport in Europe. That is tied to your passport.

Here I am walking in with a $4000 Louis Vuitton purchase from Ireland declaring every single thing because I’m not risking not being able to travel again or getting a fine for $180 for duty tax

I came back from Paris and said “yeah I spent $850 on a purse and wallet” and the customs agent was laughed and said “just above the amount, but have a good day.”

Sadly, she was being greedy trying to avoid possibly paying customs tax. She should have been honest and declared all her purchases. Sometimes the customs agents just waive you through and sometimes they don’t.

When you purchase an expensive item in a reputable store you need your passport with purchase. The purchase is registered in the system and follow you into customs as the passport is scanned.

You’re correct - credit card companies keep all your data. Amex/visa have massive databases. It’s decades old.

Passport. When you claim VAT you have to show your passport

Just to purchase one of these items and get the VAT refund you have to show your passport and it’s directly associated to your passport number - which they scan going both in and out of the countries. So yeah I’d guess it’s really easy for them to track!

I declare and I was pulled the side, I showed all the receipts and they calculated how much I have to pay and I paid it. It is attached to your passport.

I purchased everything on my credit card and it saved the receipts, especially on my Apple Card…. And I pulled everything up and they added it up!

The only way to know is if the person claimed a VAT refund in Europe, which can alert U.S. Customs to the purchase amount. If they ask you and you deny it, that’s where the problem starts. Other times, people tell the truth and are simply let go.

I saw it happen live right in front of me when coming back from Japan in the global entry line. in that case it was a tax refund he got from the Japanese, they asked if he had anything to declare and he said he had nothing to declare. immediately the agent asked him about the massive tax refund he got from the Japanese and the dude tried to backpedal quickly on nothing to declare but it didn't work
