@armedforcesfacts: Fort Knox has a simple rule: no visitors. The US Mint says no visitors are permitted at the United States Bullion Depository in Kentucky, which sits about 30 miles southwest of Louisville and holds 147.3 million fine troy ounces of US gold. The depository became the home of US gold in 1937, when the first shipment arrived by US Mail. The rule has been bent rarely. Before 1974, the Mint says President Franklin D. Roosevelt was the only person other than authorized staff to get into the vaults. Then rumors spread that the gold was gone. On September 23, 1974, the Treasury let a group of journalists and a congressional delegation inside. Sources put the group at around 130 to 150 people, and the visit lasted about two hours. It is often called an audit, but it was a supervised viewing. Secrecy is part of the security. The Mint says no one person knows all the procedures to open the vault, and it describes secrecy as perhaps the most advanced security feature of the depository. The next outside visit came on August 24, 2017, when Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin and congressional representatives toured the vaults. It was the first time the vaults had opened to non-authorized people since 1974. So the numbers tell the story: 1 rule, 1 president before 1974, around 2 hours in 1974, and 1 more visit in 2017. Would you trust a vault nobody can visit? Tell us below. #fortknox #usmint #bullion #gold #goldvault
