120 batches. Tens of thousands spent on equipment. And somehow the chewing gum I was making by hand was still better than the stuff coming out of our £100,000 machine 😭 For the last 15 months, I’ve been trying to figure out how to take the chewing gum we could make by hand and actually produce it properly at scale. Turns out, making a good piece of chewing gum is one thing. Making thousands of identical pieces without completely ruining what made it good in the first place is a very different problem. So we went back to the drawing board. We brought in Alex, a food product developer who’s helped develop hundreds of products, worked with process engineers and started testing completely different ways of making it. Eventually, we found this industrial mixer. Instead of forcing our recipe through the process our old machine wanted, this lets us recreate much more closely what we were doing by hand — just on a much bigger scale. And for the first time, the results were actually better. So we ordered it. Which is slightly terrifying considering how the last machine went 😂 But this is probably the biggest step we’ve taken towards actually being able to make OhGum at scale. 15 months of making chewing gum. 120+ failed batches. One very expensive lesson. And hopefully… One very big step closer to launch. 🫡
