@ameh.maryann: Ham and Cheese Bread Rolls Prep time: 25 minutes Rising time: 1 hour Bake time: 20–25 minutes Yield: 15–18 rolls Ingredients For the dough - 4 cups all-purpose flour (500 g) - 1 cup warm milk (240 ml) - 2¼ teaspoons instant yeast (7 g) - ¼ cup granulated sugar (50 g) - 1 large egg (50 g) - ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened (57 g) - 1 teaspoon salt (5 g) For the filling - 300 g sliced ham, cut into strips - 250 g mozzarella or cheddar cheese, grated or sliced - 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (30 g), optional - 1 teaspoon dried oregano (1 g), optional - ½ teaspoon black pepper (1 g), optional For the egg wash - 1 egg - 1 tablespoon milk (15 ml) Instructions Step 1: Prepare the dough Combine the warm milk, yeast, and sugar in a bowl. Let stand for 5–10 minutes if using active dry yeast. Add the flour, egg, salt, and softened butter. Mix until a dough forms. Step 2: Knead until smooth Knead for 8–10 minutes by hand or 5–7 minutes using a stand mixer until the dough is smooth and elastic. If it is excessively sticky, add flour a tablespoon at a time. Step 3: Allow the dough to rise Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and leave in a warm place for 45–60 minutes, or until doubled in size. Step 4: Prepare the filling Mix the ham with the cheese, black pepper, and oregano if using. Keep the filling relatively dry so the rolls do not become soggy. Step 5: Shape the rolls Gently deflate the risen dough and divide it into 15–18 equal portions. Roll each portion into a small rectangle. Spread a little mayonnaise over the dough if desired, then add the ham and cheese filling, leaving the edges clear. Fold in the sides and roll up firmly. Place each roll seam-side down on a lined baking tray. Step 6: Proof the rolls Cover loosely and leave for 15–20 minutes while the oven preheats to 180°C. Step 7: Apply the egg wash Whisk the egg with the milk and brush lightly over the rolls for a shiny, golden finish. Step 8: Bake Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the rolls are golden brown and cooked through. If the tops brown too quickly, loosely cover with foil for the remaining baking time. Step 9: Cool and serve Allow the rolls to cool for 5–10 minutes before serving. Enjoy them warm while the cheese is soft and melted. Tips for soft, delicious rolls - Use warm, not hot, milk to protect the yeast. - Avoid overfilling the dough, which can cause the rolls to split. - Seal the edges well and place each roll seam-side down. - Leave enough space between rolls for even baking. - Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container and reheat thoroughly before serving. Enjoy your fluffy, golden ham and cheese bread rolls!
