Most people believe diversification protects you. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. That’s what they told you. So you buy mutual funds. Some stocks. Some bonds. Maybe a REIT. And you feel safe. You feel diversified. Here’s the problem. It’s all the same basket. Stocks. Bonds. Mutual funds. REITs. Paper. It’s ALL paper assets. When the paper market crashes... it can all go down together. Your whole “diversified” portfolio. Same basket. Different labels. That’s not diversification. That’s de-worsification. Now... there IS a way to really diversify.
