@hoyjeff: 1. You will be starting from scratch, especially when it comes to your credit score. Unfortunately, you cannot transfer your UK credit score to the US. Even if you have an excellent credit history in the UK, you’ll basically be building your credit from zero again. 2. Speaking of credit scores, AMEX can be your best friend. If you already have an American Express card in the UK, you can apply for a Global Card Transfer. This allows you to use your existing AMEX relationship to apply for a US credit card. You may even qualify for a generous credit limit, provided you have a good payment history and have settled your outstanding balances in the UK. 3. Having a car in America is not just a want; it’s a need. Getting around without a car can be really difficult, depending on where you live. If you still don’t know how to drive and have the opportunity to visit the Philippines before moving, I highly recommend taking driving lessons there. Trust me, it will be a lot cheaper, and you’ll have the chance to learn before making the big move. 4. Get used to tipping. It’s everywhere! In the UK, when you go out for a meal, you generally pay what’s on the bill. Of course, you can leave a tip, and it’s always appreciated, but it’s not usually expected. Here in America, tipping is a big part of the dining culture. In many situations, not leaving a tip can be considered rude, especially when you’ve received table service. So, get ready to factor that into your budget! 5. Don’t let everything you see in the news discourage you. America is roughly 40 times larger than the UK. It has 50 states, each with its own lifestyle, culture, weather and opportunities. What you see happening in one state doesn’t necessarily reflect what’s happening across the entire country. You can explore your options and find somewhere that suits your lifestyle. Most importantly, just enjoy the transition. Moving to another country is never easy. You’ll have to adjust, learn new things, make mistakes and start over in ways you probably never expected. But don’t forget why you started in the first place.
