12 NSE STOCKS… BUT THIS PORTFOLIO HAS A BIG PROBLEM! This investment portfolio is down approximately 0.5%, but when I started reviewing the individual holdings, I discovered some issues that investors should pay close attention to. The investor had 12 companies listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) in their portfolio. While some stocks were performing well, two holdings stood out for the wrong reasons: one was down by more than 66%, while another had declined by approximately 51%. And that wasn't the only concern. A significant portion of the portfolio was also concentrated in the banking sector. This is why conducting a proper stock portfolio review in Kenya involves much more than looking at whether your overall portfolio is making a profit or a loss. In this portfolio analysis, I examine several important areas: Individual stock performance: A portfolio can appear relatively stable overall while individual holdings experience substantial losses. We need to understand what is happening at the company level, not just look at the overall portfolio percentage. Portfolio allocation: How much capital has been invested in each company? Are some holdings carrying too much weight, and are the smaller positions making a meaningful contribution to the portfolio? Banking sector concentration: Owning shares in several different banks does not automatically mean you have a well-diversified portfolio. Companies operating in the same sector can share similar economic, regulatory, credit, and market risks. Sector allocation is therefore an important part of managing investment risk. Stock selection and company fundamentals: When a share price declines significantly, investors should investigate the company's financial performance, profitability, balance sheet, valuation, business outlook, and any developments that may explain the decline. A lower share price alone does not make a stock a bargain. Winning and losing positions: Some holdings in this portfolio were performing well, while others were recording substantial losses. A proper portfolio review considers both sides and evaluates how each investment contributes to the investor's overall objectives. Portfolio restructuring: The objective of a portfolio review is to identify potential weaknesses, assess the quality of the underlying investments, evaluate concentration risk, and determine whether the existing allocation still supports the investor's financial goals. One important lesson for anyone investing in NSE shares is that owning 12 different companies does not necessarily mean you have a properly diversified investment portfolio. The number of stocks matters, but so do their individual weights, sector exposure, business fundamentals, valuations, and correlation of risks. If you are investing in the Nairobi Securities Exchange, regularly reviewing your NSE stock portfolio, portfolio allocation, banking stocks, dividend-paying shares, capital gains, and investment risk can help you make more informed decisions. Don't just ask whether your portfolio is in profit or loss. Ask whether the companies you own still deserve a place in your portfolio.
