I read somewhere that when a person experiences too much stress, anxiety, trauma, etc. the brain is not able to create long term memories because it is stuck on survival mode.

This is me! I lived in survival mode and have no memories of happiness as a child. I always said it was the wall I built to hide behind because I felt safe not thinking about it. I’m 57 now and this makes me so sad ! You never get over the trauma even if you can’t remember it. 🥺

Except for the parts we don’t want to remember. Like that stupid thing I said or should I say all the stupid things I’ve done said that just hang around in brain to be remembered without even trying.

I was diagnosed by my therapist with what’s called CPTSD. Complex post traumatic stress disorder. I remember almost nothing of my life before I was 17. No holidays, no birthdays. No first day of school, no graduation. No friends. It is different from regular PTSD in that CPTSD come from long term trauma, often beginning in early childhood. For those of you who have not heard about this before, some research might at least give you some understanding of why you can’t remember your life.

The last 10 years of my life I've had so much loss and trauma. I genuinely can't remember anything. I know it's dissociation

Yes!! Omg I say oh my memory is terrible. I hear people my age (46+) reminise about their school days and I sit and try so hard I can’t remember a thing and that goes all the way through my life. Now I can’t remember when my children were born, I can’t remember them as babies. I never thought about dissociation being the cause of how do we fix it? Can we fix it? X

Its a natural deffence system of the brain. Otherwise you wouldnt be able to function. So it is a good thing .
