Between February and April 1991, thirteen children suffered sudden, unexplained collapses on Ward 4, the children's ward of Grantham and Kesteven Hospital in Lincolnshire, England. Four of them died, and nine survived, some with lasting harm. Staff nurse Beverley Allitt, then 22, was on duty for every incident. Police investigated, and in May 1993 a jury at Nottingham Crown Court convicted her of four murders, three attempted murders, and six counts of causing grievous bodily harm. She received thirteen life sentences, one for each child, with a minimum term of 30 years. She has been held at Rampton Secure Hospital, and became eligible for parole consideration after that minimum term expired in November 2021.
