His political involvement resulted in a government ban from 1973 to 1982, with three of those years spent under house arrest. Despite these challenges, Mattera continued his active participation, joining the National Forum against "racial exclusivity" of the United Democratic Front. Beyond his activism, Mattera showcased his literary passion through poetry, an autobiography titled "Memory is the Weapon," plays, and children's stories. His significant contributions earned him the prestigious Steve Biko Prize. A seasoned journalist, Mattera left his mark at publications like The Sunday Times, The Weekly Mail (now Mail & Guardian), and The Sowetan. He was recognized as a captivating motivational speaker and master of ceremonies in various events. The University of Natal honored him with an honorary Doctorate (Dlit) degree in Literature. However, on July 31, 2004, Mattera announced his retirement from public performances, marking the culmination of a remarkable and impactful career.
