Transportation is one of those things you really need to think about when settling in Canada, especially if you do not have a car yet. [1] Public transportation depends a lot on your area In some places, the bus stop might be very close to your house. In others, you may have to walk 5 to 10 minutes before you even get there, and during winter, that walk can feel much longer. [2] Winter can really affect your commute I once waited for a train during a heavy snowstorm. The screen that normally showed the arrival time went completely blank, and the train eventually came about 20 to 30 minutes later. By then, my hands and nose were already freezing. [3] Always give yourself extra time during winter If you have work, an appointment or somewhere you really need to be on time, do not plan your journey as if everything will run perfectly. The weather can easily delay things. [4] Grocery shopping without a car requires planning You may have to decide whether to shop more often, buy in bulk and take an Uber, use grocery delivery or live somewhere that has grocery stores close by. [5] Where you work matters too For my first job in Canada, I had to take a bus, then a train, and still walk to the office. I was spending at least one hour in transit, so your work location can really affect your daily routine. [6] A place can look close on the map and still take long to get to Sometimes it is not even the distance. It is the waiting time, transfers and walking that make the journey longer than you expected. [7] If you have children, you have to think beyond your own commute School or daycare drop-off and pickup also matter, especially when you are trying to fit everything around your work schedule. [8] Cheap rent does not always mean you are saving money Sometimes a house is cheaper because it is farther away, but you may end up spending more on Uber, transit or eventually needing a car because everything is far from you. [9] Before renting, think about your actual everyday life Check how easy it will be to get to work, school, daycare, grocery stores, church, clinics and the other places you know you will be going regularly. Do not look at rent alone. If you want to check out some of the things I use and recommend, you can find them in my Amazon storefront.
