@microburbs: Tasmania lost nearly 4,000 people in one year. Now it's back to almost zero. In the year to March 2026, 14,559 people moved to Tasmania from another state and 14,657 left. Net: −98. Almost dead even. Queensland sent a net 1,288 south, New South Wales 627 and the Territory 80. Victoria took a net 1,716, and WA, SA and the ACT another 377. Tasmania gained people from other states every year from 2016 to 2022 (up to +3,794 in the year to March 2021). Then three years of losses: −2,853, −3,856 and −1,246. Two years ago it lost almost 4,000. This year, 98. Data: ABS via Microburbs (preliminary estimates for the year to March 2026). Maybe if Tassie offered more study options and job opportunities, fewer people would feel the need to leave. Many students who want to become doctors or nurses have to move to the mainland to pursue their careers, which can be terrifying, especially when they’re only 17–19 or 20–25 and moving away from home.

If your life is settled, great place to live, hence why I think people who choose to move here thrive. Otherwise however, opportunities are few and far between, and it can be incredibly isolating. Also nothing every progresses here. Lived here 32 years and it's barely changed

Problem is the age of those leaving and those coming, don’t have appropriate health facilities for the never ending influx of retirees

I love Tasmania, but I understand why it is hard to keep young people here. Limited job opportunities, TasTafe offers very limited course options.

Having lived and studied in Tasmania, I consider it one of the most beautiful places in the world, with exceptional natural beauty and some of the purest air. I would love to move back one day.
I once proposed the idea of developing Tasmania into an international education and research hub, attracting students and encouraging long-term settlement. Although COVID interrupted that vision, I still believe Tasmania has tremendous potential beyond tourism while preserving its unique charm.

Good living standards if you are retired, but lack of employment opportunities and study without a high cost make it difficult ❤️

Our tourism industry is heavily rooted in our arts and wildlife. Despite this all government funding is going to building a stadium with no public transport to support the number of people they plan to host, and dozens of AI data centres that are going to destroy our major marketing as being the cleanest place on earth
