Big mistakes 🫣 What if the biggest mistake you make in your 30s or 40s doesn't show up on your face until your 50s? We're told that cosmetic procedures are preventive. Start early. Maintain your results. Keep stimulating collagen. Keep adding volume. Keep tightening. But here's the question we should be asking more often: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE TISSUE UNDERNEATH YOUR SKIN AFTER YEARS OF INTERVENTION? Not every procedure causes long-term damage. Many have legitimate benefits. But some carry risks that deserve far more attention before you commit. Here are five I would investigate carefully. 1️⃣ BOTOX | MUSCLE ATROPHY AND BONE CHANGES Botulinum toxin works by temporarily reducing muscle activity. With repeated injections, treated muscles can become smaller. Research involving masseter injections has also raised concerns about changes in jawbone remodeling, although human evidence is mixed. This does not mean forehead Botox has been proven to cause facial bone loss. My concern? Facial muscles and bones contribute to the structure of your face. Repeatedly altering muscle activity deserves a long-term conversation, not just a wrinkle consultation. 2️⃣ DERMAL FILLERS | PERSISTENCE, MIGRATION AND INFLAMMATION We were once commonly told that hyaluronic acid fillers disappear within 6 to 12 months. Imaging studies have demonstrated that some fillers can remain detectable for years. Potential complications include migration, nodules, persistent swelling, vascular occlusion and delayed inflammatory reactions, including foreign body granulomas. These reactions involve the immune system, but they are not necessarily systemic autoimmune diseases. And dissolving filler may require multiple treatments or fail to resolve every complication. 3️⃣ RADIOFREQUENCY | UNWANTED TISSUE DAMAGE Radiofrequency uses controlled heat to stimulate tissue remodeling. But poorly selected settings, inappropriate depth or excessive energy can cause burns, tissue injury and potentially unwanted facial fat loss. This is particularly concerning when facial volume is already diminishing with age. The goal should never be tightening at any cost. 4️⃣ AGGRESSIVE LASERS AND DEEP PEELS | PIGMENTATION AND SCARRING Resurfacing can improve wrinkles, discoloration and texture. But excessive or poorly performed treatments can lead to prolonged inflammation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation and scarring. The more aggressive the procedure, the more important proper patient selection, recovery and experienced medical supervision become. 5️⃣ AGGRESSIVE MICRONEEDLING | MORE INJURY ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER Microneedling intentionally creates controlled microinjuries to stimulate repair. Properly performed treatments can improve certain scars and skin texture. But excessive depth, repeated aggressive treatments, infection or inadequate recovery can increase the risk of persistent inflammation, pigmentation problems and scarring. There is no good evidence that every microneedling session causes cumulative facial scarring. SO WHAT WOULD I PRIORITIZE INSTEAD? Three approaches that support the biology of healthy aging. 🥚 1. COLLAGEN + ADEQUATE PROTEIN Your body needs amino acids to maintain connective tissue and repair proteins. Prioritize adequate complete protein, vitamin C-rich foods and sufficient overall nutrition. Collagen peptides may provide additional support for skin hydration and elasticity, although results vary and they do not replace dietary protein. 💪 2. CREATINE + MUSCLE PRESERVATION Creatine, particularly alongside resistance training, can support skeletal muscle strength and performance. I also incorporate gentle facial exercises, but evidence that facial yoga meaningfully reverses facial aging is still preliminary. Preserving muscle and physical function is a long-term health strategy, not simply a cosmetic one. ✨ 3.
