What’s my story? What happened to me? Well, put your seatbelts on, and let’s take a trip down memory lane! On October 29, 2023, I was cruising home in the wee hours of the morning… it was lightly raining.. I was (or so I thought) the only car on the interstate….. but in the blink of an eye, I “woke up”.. flat on my back feeling exhausted…. My vision was blurry, but I could see flashing blue and red lights… I could hear glass crunching… and the face of a man hovering above me…. Very confused, I asked this face… “what happened to me?” The man replied “you were in an accident..” Still confused, and now concerned.. I asked the man again.. “but… what happened to me?” He replied again “someone hit you…” Seeing the panic in his face… I tried to reach towards him… he said “don’t… you’re very badly injured..” so I retracted my arm… my body relaxed… and I thought to myself “it’ll be ok.. the paramedics are here”…… the next thing I remember was waking up again in the ICU at skyline medical in Nashville Tennessee… they informed me that I was hit by a drunk driver, who I’d later find out was a 20 year old man driving 120mph while his BAC was .24 multiple hours after the accident (he refused a breathalyzer and blood was drawn later)… he was uninsured, and walked away uninjured…. I, on the other hand, crushed my c6 vertebra, leaving me paralyzed from the chest down… and this is just the tip of the iceberg… paralysis comes with complications nobody in the able bodied world talks about… accessibility, medical, insurance and so much more… completely having to relearn how to do the smallest tasks, like feeding yourself, or finding your sense of self and confidence when it’s all been ripped away… but I never let it slow me down!! I’ve got too much to live for. I lived through an experience that should have taken me out- but I’m still here, and proud of it!! My journey started at Skyline Medical. My rehabilitation center was Shepherd Center of Atlanta My physical therapy of choice is NeuroRecovery Center of Nashville and my current gym is @@The Y (ymca)! Never forget to live life to the fullest, no matter what condition you find yourself in!
