@deadlyshorts3: Daisy Catterall, 25, from Cirencester, died on 22 February 2025 from haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) — a rare condition in which the immune system fails to switch off and attacks the body's own organs, blood cells and tissues. Daisy had never been ill in her life, was a daily gym-goer, and had just bought her first home with boyfriend Matty when she rang her mum Rachel in January 2025 about swollen glands. Doctors diagnosed a viral infection. Over the following weeks came aching joints and rashes, each time put down to the same thing. She was admitted with an abnormal blood count, then discharged the day before her parents flew to Cambodia, insisting they go. Two days into the trip a consultant requested a bone marrow biopsy; by the time Rachel landed back in the UK, Daisy was in critical care with failing kidneys. Before she was placed in an induced coma, Rachel told her she'd wake up in the Philippines. HLH mimics sepsis, affects roughly 100 people in the UK each year, and is fatal in around half of cases without swift diagnosis.
