@sfchronicle: On a bluff above the beach just north of Monterey, Vibeke Norgaard walked along a stretch of jagged pavement hanging over the sand. Nearby, a 30-foot-high berm of crumbling concrete extended hundreds of feet up the beach — the tattered remnants of an old industrial mining operation that have plagued this small enclave for decades. Looking south along the shoreline, Norgaard could see beachgoers and surfers extending all the way to downtown Monterey and colorful facades of Cannery Row in the distance. “Look at the view. It’s incredible and as far as the eye can see,” said Norgaard, the city manager of Sand City. “But people don’t think to come here because of this mess.” The half-mile of beach in the heart of Sand City, a pocket community along Highway 1, was nearly empty. Only a couple of metal detector-wielding walkers wanded the sand around a stack of old concrete slabs piled in the surf that brought to mind a fallen Jenga tower. The beach has languished for 50 years. But Sand City may have found an unusual way to restore it. Read more via the link in our bio. Credit: Gregory Thomas/S.F. Chronicle

I really hope this doesn’t go through. Part of what makes our home so beautiful is nature. Also not sure why this would be permitted in a Marine sanctuary.

God no. Leave sand city alone. The peninsula has no water as it is.

Real smart building that close to the water given how bad things are getting now. How many storms until the cliff is eroded back another few feet?

Wow. 😂 This is really good propaganda. Blighted beach? It’s a beach. I don’t mind development but you’re probably going to put some severely overpriced hotel there right?
