Why was this earthquake felt more strongly farther from its epicenter? なぜ震央から遠い場所のほうが強く揺れたのでしょうか？ Today’s earthquake occurred about 350 km deep, southeast of Mie. The waves weakened as they traveled upward toward Mie. However, the submerged oceanic plate carried the waves more efficiently toward Tokyo and eastern Japan. This caused some distant areas to shake more than Mie. This known phenomenon is called “anomalous seismic intensity distribution” (異常震域). 今日の地震は、三重県南東沖の深さ約350kmで発生しました。地震の波は、三重県の地表に向かう途中で弱まりました。一方、沈み込んだ海洋プレートは、東京や東日本へ地震の波を効率よく伝えました。そのため、三重県よりも遠く離れた場所で強い揺れが観測されました。この現象は「異常震域」と呼ばれています。
