I still remember very clearly reading a book where the main character is very ill and could basically just die at any moment because of her illness and, at some point in the book, everything is going fine, when suddenly you turn the page, and the double page is just completely black with just a few white words in the middle, something like "And then, my heart" on the left page, and "Stops." on the right page. Let me tell you, she's not the only one whose heart stopped

Jumpscares are cheap anyway. Tension is the key to good horror, and a jumpscare breaks that tension. In short... You don't need them if the book is written well.

I know it's not true. Reading It by Stephen King, it happened so often that I kept finding myself closing my eyes, which is weird because then you can't read, but the fear is so sudden and out of nowhere, "jump-scared," that it's part of your automatic fear response and has got nothing to do with logic or making sense. It's pure reaction. On the other hand, maybe the people who say that are just really slow readers, unable to read fast enough (like don't take in whole phrases, sentences, or sections all at once when reading but instead read word by word or letter by letter) for anything they read to be able to suddenly take them by surprise.
