@shrink.think: How do you tell the difference between typical teenage rebellion and emerging Borderline Personality Disorder? Adolescence is already full of mood swings, big feelings and shifting friendships. But when we look at emerging BPD in teens, it comes down to three key metrics: intensity, duration and frequency. Here are 4 key signs that point toward emerging BPD rather than typical adolescent angst: 1. Extreme Fear of Abandonment: Overwhelming panic, terror or explosive anger at the thought of a friend, partner or parent leaving—leading to frantic efforts to keep someone close or ending relationships prematurely to avoid rejection. 2. Rapid, Severe Mood Shifts: Going from euphoric to deeply despairing or intensely angry within hours, with emotional reactions that take hours or days to return to baseline. 3. Unstable, Shifting Sense of Self: A hollow or non-existent identity, radically shifting values, goals or personality traits depending on who they are around, paired with chronic emptiness. 4. Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms: Impulsive behaviors—like self-harm, reckless substance use, severe food restriction or dangerous driving—used to escape unbearable emotional pain. user538739352 :
actually the DSM says that for any personality disorder to be diagnosed symptoms need to be pervasive for over 2 years for ANYONE. So tired of y'all not following stuff like this.
