The only doctor that made me feel safe at Mayo got off of her 24 hour shift right before I went into my surgery. I was devastated, for both of us. For me not to have her, and for her to be expected to operate for 24 hours.

the 8 hrs between shifts minimum is already pretty bad, even if a resident wants to do btb there's not a lot that can be done in 8 hours when you include commute, decompression, and getting ready again.

This is a real problem. The resident assisting my Csection was on hour 22 of her hr shift. Im a healthcare worker so I get it but I was nervous and felt like this is wrong.

I'm sorry, but it's so bad already and they're making it *WORSE*??? And sure, there's an 80 hour a week cap on paper, but there have been plenty of residents who say that they end up having to work more than that and just can't document it or they risk losing their residency. Everyone loses here

Many years ago I had a client come in who was a reconstructive surgeon and I’ve genuinely have never met someone so truly exhausted from being overworked. Hadn’t had a vacation in several years, said she doesn’t have time for friends, doesn’t have time to do anything for herself, doesn’t have time to have friends or to have a pet. The state of her mental health was extremely concerning, it’s been 8-9years since then and I still wonder if she’s okay and how she’s doing. No one deserves to be overworked, especially to the point to where this surgeon was. I feel like some hospitals treat their doctors like they’re machines and not people.

Yeah after this, I’m done. I’m not doing residency here. Canada here I come. Almost crashed from exhaustion during clinicals after 80+ weeks. Not going to kill myself for this

When I was a young medic we worked 72 hour shifts. It was horrible. I worked in a pretty violent city and we would routinely go 30-40 hours before we got a decent break for some sleep. When transitioned to working in the ER I was shocked to see similar schedules for many of the ER Doctors.
