@drkathynickerson: Most of what people think they know about affairs is wrong. People cheat for complicated reasons. For the most part, affairs are painkillers, they have almost nothing to do with love and everything to do with escape. It is not the betrayed partner's fault that their partner chose to cheat. There were 1 million things they could've done instead of cheating to cope with their pain. Cheating is a terrible painkiller that only makes pain worse. So before you assume that affairs are about love and that it's impossible for someone to cheat if they actually love their partner, please look at the research on infidelity. You will see that affairs have much more in common with addiction than they do with love. Wishing you a happy Halloween! ##AffairRecovery##cheating##cheater##cheatersneverchange##infidelityrecovery
Nope. No excuses. And, definitely no compassion. Leave them. Heal. And, let them rot in their choices.

My fiancé and I have been together for almost 8 years. We’ve spent the last 4 years long-distance because of our careers, and we’re finally planning to close that distance when we get married in 6 months.
But 3 months ago, I found out he had cheated on me, He says he was going through a traumatic experience, was depressed, felt lonely, and I wasn’t physically there. We’re both in therapy and trying to rebuild, but my trust is shattered, I’m questioning the future we planned.
Most advice about staying after infidelity is for married couples with kids and a life already built together. We were just about to start ours.
How do I know if I still want to marry him, or if I’m just holding on to the future I thought we’d have?

The ultimate form of love is consideration. So NO, you don’t love your partner if you’re willing to absolutely destroy them by cheating.

My spouse cheated after I was diagnosed with cancer while I have been going through treatment. It feels hard to forgive with this added context. I was in pain and in a dark place too, and they made my pain worse to ease theirs.

Even most marriages don't have love either. They're stuck together cuz of legal obligations and transactions

I dealt with an ex boyfriend who was a covert serial cheater. He didn’t confess about his actions at all until a year together. I never knew or would’ve guessed anything prior because we spent most days together. I asked him why he did what he did and he said that it was the feeling of the chase and the risk of possibly being caught. He said he also felt numb to it. He was with me because he said I was the most consistent person but the others were not. I did my best to stay and understand him more/be supportive to him to heal for almost a year but he kept repeating his actions after the fact along with doing other toxic behaviors. After moving on with the help of therapy and then meeting someone else that’s the complete opposite of my ex with behaviors it makes me reflect upon the past relationship and that my ex’s actions were not acceptable but they were not personal actions toward me to only hurt me. Rather he was a person with emotional layers and unfortunately chose cheating as his way to cope with them. I just happened to be in a relationship with him so I experienced his actions directly. Hopefully one day he finds the ability to heal himself but I ultimately moved on.

Cheaters convince themselves that they have a troubled relationship to justify their betrayal to themselves. If the relationship was bad enough the partner would have some awareness. How many betraying partners admit after the affair has ended that there weren't really any significant issues that couldn't have been sorted by simply starting a conversation. Yes they will have been struggling mentally or emotionally but their coping and communication skills were likely very poor, not an excuse of course. Someone presenting themselves as a "friend" and "available and willing" to insert themselves into the relationship perhaps seems a pain killer until it destroys everything they had.
