@catalystvet: 🎃🍫 How much chocolate is actually toxic to your dog? With Halloween here, chocolate ingestion is one of the big concerns for pet owners! But did you know the type and amount of chocolate eaten, along with your dog's weight, determine the risk of toxicity? Chocolate ranked from LEAST to MOST toxic: White chocolate Milk chocolate Dark/Semisweet chocolate Unsweetened baking chocolate Cocoa powder Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which can cause toxicity at different doses. Approximate toxic doses (combined theobromine + caffeine): 9 mg/lb (20 mg/kg): Vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness 18–23 mg/lb (40–50 mg/kg): Elevated heart rate, abnormal heart rhythms 27+ mg/lb (60+ mg/kg): Tremors, seizures, potentially life-threatening complications Clinical signs typically develop within 6–12 hours but can occur earlier. You can estimate your dog's risk using the Merck Veterinary Manual Chocolate Toxicity Calculator! ⚠️ IMPORTANT: These are approximate thresholds, NOT safe doses. Even if your dog isn't showing symptoms, contact your veterinarian or pet poison control immediately after chocolate ingestion. Don't wait for symptoms! Lily, LVT :
Definitely call poison control first. They charge about $100 while the ER fee often starts around $200 for an exam and based on the type of chocolate and your pets size you may just be able to monitor at home (this coming from an ER vet tech)
