@jessicalaurennn96: this is a topic i’m soooo passionate about. i went to nursing school with the hopes of becoming an ER nurse. i was told COUNTLESS times that “you can’t work in the ER right out of school.” i once responded with “i will go anywhere in the country. i’ll work in alaska if i have to” because i was THAT passionate about working in the ER. why should i have to work two years in a unit i have no interest in? doesn’t that lead to faster burn out? i know im going to ruffle feathers with this one but i truly believe forcing people to work somewhere they don’t want to work is bad for mental health and in the long run may not support your goals! please feel free to argue with me in the comments! 🫶🏼 #newgradnurse #newgradernurse
I owe my whole nursing career to a level 1 trauma ED as a new grad! Mine had a residency program for your first year, and 6 month mandatory orientation with a preceptor! And then, you have 1 bed for 2 weeks, 2 beds for 2 weeks and so on!

While I was in nursing school, I already knew I had no intention of ever working in medsurg.

In my opinion everything is a specialty. Nursing home, corrections, ed, medsurg, L&D, etc so just do what you want to do because all settings require different set of skills.

We start new grads every year in our Level I Trauma Center. I’ll take a new grad any day over an RN with 1 yr of med surge experience.

I’ve been a medsurg nurse for 6 years now. I wanted to start in the ER. But they would not hire me as a new grad. So yeah, I agree! BUTTT finally starting as an ER nurse this November! I’m so nervous but excited!

level one is good cause you have all the things that you need a typically better staffing. Go to a Rural level 4 and see what happens 😂

I totally agree. You really should start where you want to end up. But I think IFFFF we really make someone do something before their forever home, it should be ER or icu first. Emergency management is most valuable in my opinion. So idk how medsurg became the default

The clinical judgment isn’t there as a new head. But for some people there is. I guess it depends on the person and how comfortable they are.

The new grads that I watched start in the ED were miles ahead of new grads starting on the floor. It’s sink or swim, and they swam 🏊♀️.

This is so refreshing to hear as a new grad who accepted a job in the ER with many people telling me I shouldn’t

It depends on the person, I have a role transition student who could probably do circles around a coworker who graduated last year with time management and clinical/critical thinking.

Working on the floor is not the same as working in the er. It’s a completely different way of thinking. I wish I had started working in the er but here we are. At least it gives me an edge with hold patients in the ER

Hot take: I’d WAY rather see an EMS requirement for ER nursing than not being a new grad.

Go into that specialty as a new grad RN 🤗 but don’t go straight to NP school without ever working as a nurse…hot take from a 20 year veteran [Innocent]

You have to learn your speciality no matter if you start from med surg or as a new grad. I really think starting where you want to be is absolutely fine. Go where your passion is.

new grads should work in specialties to learn the skills and prioritization/specfic time management skills r/t that area etc that comes with the specialty. med surg is its own specialty and other than the most basic knowledge, it doesn't translate to the other specialties

I think that the analogy to commercial aviation is a strong one, in part because healthcare has already learned so much from that safety culture.
NO PILOT flies in a 747 without thousands of hours in smaller, more simple aircraft.
Is that because aviation doesn't think that pilots should specialize? Of course not.
Is it because they think that flying a small plane will teach all the skills necessary for a jumbo jet? Of course not.
Aviation recognizes that large, complex, *risky* roles benefit from a "foundation" (her words!) of universal skills. And those skills are best developed in an environment in which the stakes are low and the pace is controlled. THAT'S why critical care is more than merely another specialty. Because the patients are *more acute* than other units, and because the workload is *less controlled*.
So listen to those of us with the diverse experiences to know -- building "foundational" skills in a subacute space is the wise way to set yourself up for success. Because you can have the best copilot in the world, and a superstar team of traffic controllers and mechanics, but at the end of the day it's YOUR license, and it's YOUR hands on the wheel, and those lives are YOUR responsibility.
