When you didn’t ask for help with cleaning, did you still give him privileges? For example, did you still cook for him? Did you still make his coffee in the mornings or do your normal routine outside of asking? I’m asking these questions—not because I’m blaming you, but—men don’t listen to silence. Men listen to equal action and then complain. You notice he doesn’t put effort into thinking of you or the house. He doesn’t carry his own weight. So when you say “I’m not going to ask him”, he’s already shown you that words don’t bother him, whether they’re said or not. Simply stop feeding him. Stop setting up all these things for him. When Father’s Day and all these holidays come around, no gifts, nothing. Leave it as a regular day. And when he finally notices that you’re not budging while asking “why?” You feel free to shrug it off and say “you don’t put in any effort, so I expect nothing of you. I don’t put my energy into someone who doesn’t care about their home or me. That’s not who I married. If you want to really change, don’t expect me to ask you to help carry your weight with chores. You can do your own laundry now. You can make your own meals if you don’t want to clean dishes that I made dinner on for you. You can care for yourself. And before you use the excuse of having a busy day at work, I’ve been having a busy life cleaning up after you with no gratitude, help, or acknowledgement. That is not fair to me, so I do not wish to argue. This is how it’ll be going forward since you don’t know how to treat me.”
