IMO: The therapist can give the tools and resources to help you fight the fire, which they utilize themselves to not be consumed in the flames brought by others but you are chained to the position you choose to stay in and to save your self you have to face the fire/traumas before it consumes you. His focus is on the flames, nothing is on the table but the therapist is ready when he is.

You trusted them to put out the fire, but they became nothing more than a spectator while your world burned.

Stunning piece. The psychical protections worn by the professional, the academic protections of the degrees. The unstoppable growing wall of destruction behind the other. No protections, no fear, possible doubt, but nonetheless, an enormous amount of courage. May they both be protected. May we be protected.

My interpretation is that the therapist, whose certificates suggest he is highly qualified, is wearing a mask to protect himself from the smoke of the fire. The smoke represents the emotional burden of listening to multiple patients’ traumas. In real life, this could mean that the therapist has a therapist of their own or has mastered the art of maintaining emotional boundaries without internalising their patients’ pain. Thr fire extinguishers being behind the therapist, I don’t think this necessarily suggests that the therapist isn’t helping..Having been to therapy myself, I believe that you are often guided towards finding the answers to your own questions and learning to SAVE YOURSELf. The fire extinguishers could represent the tools and support available when a patient struggles to manage a situation independently. For example, if a patient is in a dangerous situation but cannot recognise it, the therapist may need to be more assertive and provide direct guidance rather than simply encouraging the patient to find the answers themselves. my overall interpretation: you can be emotionally available to help people wihout sacrificing your own well being.

I immediately interpreted it as the government. They sit there with all the solutions to fix issues, but instead choose to sit there and do nothing while people watch as the world feels like it’s falling apart

There are two fire extinguishers, meaning that they can work together to put out the fire, but one of them, the one who has all of the protection in the world, hides them behind his chair. The fire is reaching him now, but he still refuses to use them.

I saw it as an analogy for the state of the world. There is an extreme tension brewing worldwide and the ones who could stop it sit by and watch it swelter as well. This is the symbolism of the fire fighter and we are the man in the button up.

...Here's my interpretation: Fire represents trauma. The cilent is chained to it because he cannot run away from his trauma. The mask the therapist is wearing represents the distance a therapist needs to keep to avoid being engulfed with the cilent. The extinguishers represent the tools the therapist gives the cilent. The cilent staring at the fire rather than the extinguishers represents someone focusing on the problem and ignoring possible solutions. The fact that neither of them are scared of the fire represents two things: The cilent having become used to the flame after so long that they cannot comprehend a world without it, even if it burns everything down, as well as the therapist having seen many people become consumed by their trauma that they are used to it.

The Central Dynamic: The artwork heavily evokes the setting of a therapy session or a deep psychological confrontation. It visualizes the stark distance between someone experiencing an overwhelming, burning internal collapse and the structured, insulated mechanisms (like therapy or intellectual defenses) used to process or suppress that pain.
