A 20-year-old commercial pilot has been identified by her family as the co-pilot aboard the Learjet 60 that crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, killing all nine people on board. Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras was aboard the business jet when it went down Sunday, November 1, near Greenacres, Florida. The aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. Before the crash, the flight crew reported icing, moderate turbulence and precipitation while communicating with air traffic control. The pilots requested a higher altitude while searching for smoother conditions. Moments later, the situation deteriorated dramatically. The crew reported that the aircraft was rapidly losing altitude and had entered an overspeed condition. A mayday call followed as the Learjet descended at an extreme rate before crashing near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North at approximately 12:50 p.m. All nine people aboard were killed. Gadelha, who grew up in Palm Beach County, had pursued aviation from a young age. Her family says she earned her private pilot’s license at just 17 years old while still attending high school. She later became a commercial pilot and had accumulated approximately 1,300 hours of flight time. According to her stepfather, roughly 10 minutes before the crash Gadelha sent her boyfriend a message indicating that the aircraft was experiencing turbulence and ice. The crash created a massive fireball and impact crater in a residential area. Hundreds of nearby residents were displaced while emergency crews and federal investigators secured the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation with assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration. Investigators will examine the wreckage, flight data, weather information, aircraft maintenance history and other evidence to determine what caused the aircraft to lose control. The presence of icing, turbulence and severe weather does not establish the cause of the crash. Federal investigators have not yet determined what caused the Learjet’s rapid descent. Nine people boarded a flight headed for the Bahamas. Minutes before the crash, the crew was communicating with air traffic control about difficult conditions. Then came a mayday call, an uncontrollable descent and a tragedy that claimed everyone aboard. Now investigators are trying to determine exactly what went wrong. #FloridaPlaneCrash #NathaliaGadelha #Learjet60 #PalmBeachCounty #Greenacres 💔 Emotional impact: Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras was only 20 years old and had already turned her childhood passion for aviation into a career.
