Trainer here, this is what I tell my newbies: Some discomfort is expected if you are not used to this type of work or being on your feet all day, but you can minimize it. Start with cushion sole socks, or compression socks, with good insoles on thick soled, properly fitted running shoes. Stick to the same type of shoe once you find one that fits properly, & replace them every 3-4 months, or sooner. I found Avias Elevate to be affordable, good shoes. (I wear out more expensive shoes just as fast, but I am reluctant or unable to buy new, so I get less expensive shoes & I replace more often.) Don’t skip out on insoles!!! When it’s cooler I sometimes wear 2 pair of socks for extra cushion. Stretch!!! We don’t emphasize that enough. You are walking, not running, so not as many muscles are used. You need to target less used muscles. If you don’t do a lot of squatting then you need to do some squats & lunges. Just because you walk miles at work does not mean you can skip workouts. Do not underestimate the power of an epson salt soak. I take magnesium, calcium, vit D, and potassium to help manage muscle pain. You should adjust in a few weeks but if pain increases or you can’t find anything to improve, see your doc or a podiatrist.
