Bringing back my most popular fall recipe from last year! Try these savory scones for your next baking project 🙂‍↕️⬇️ French Onion Scones Recipe 🧅🧀 For the caramelized onions: 1 tbsp olive oil 2 yellow onions, diced For the scones: 2 cups (255g) all purpose flour 1 tbsp + 1 tsp (20g) granulated sugar 2 1/4 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp baking soda 3/4 tsp kosher salt 1/4 tsp ground black pepper 2 tbsp fresh thyme 6 tbsp (85g) unsalted butter, cut into small cubes 4 oz (114g) Gruyère, cut into small cubes 1/2 cup heavy cream or buttermilk Egg wash (1 egg + 2 tbsp milk, mixed together) Caramelize the onions: add olive oil to a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onions and season with a pinch of salt. Cook for 5 minutes, until translucent, then reduce the heat to medium low. Continue cooking, stirring often, 35 to 40 minutes (yes... it takes a while). Add a bit more olive oil if it starts to stick. Preheat the oven to 375ºF / 190º C. Line a baking sheet with parchment and set aside. Make the scone dough: add the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and black pepper to a mixing bowl. Whisk together. Add the butter to the bowl and pinch between your fingers to break it into the flour. Keep working it into the mixture until only small pieces remain. Add the Gruyère, thyme, and caramelized onions, then pour in the cream and mix until a crumbly dough forms. Dump the dough on a work surface and knead together. Fold it in half one or two times to help create layers. Shape the dough into a 6-inch circle -- it should be 1-inch tall. Cut the dough into 6 scones and place them on the baking sheet. Brush the tops of the scones with egg wash and pop them in the oven. Bake for 24 to 26 minutes, until the scones are golden brown. Let cool slightly and enjoy warm while the cheese is melty! 🧀 #bakingtok #scones #recipesoftiktok
