The difference.....in the last of us, everyone is already dead or dying. Plus, Spiderman's cure was guaranteed to work. It was already synthesized. Ellie was merely ASSUMED to be capable of creating a cure, but she would die in the process. Ellie was a better weapon against the problem alive than dead and in Spiderman, both parties were guaranteed to die unless one or the other got the cure. So, they are both heroes in their own right. Plus, I don't mean this in a bad way, but Aunt May is elderly, Ellie was not. The single most universal rule is to protect children at all costs first and foremost.

The difference was Aunt May got to make the choice. Joel saved Ellie from a fate decided by people not qualified to make it who hadn't even asked her if she was willing. The day humanity decides to rob a child of their life and their choice on a hail Mary cure is the day humanity has died.
