@themenendezarchives: Lyle Menendez’s relationship with Stacy Feldman offers a fascinating glimpse into just how personal his stuffed animals were to him. Lyle had been deeply attached to his stuffed animals since childhood. He gave them names and personalities and described them as his “own family.” They were a source of comfort and companionship, and he said they made him feel safer. Then there was Stacy. Stacy Feldman was Lyle’s high-school girlfriend and his first serious relationship. And Lyle didn’t simply give her a teddy bear. He testified that he bought Stacy 20 stuffed animals, many of them white teddy bears they called “Pookies.” He also gave her a huge teddy bear for Christmas. But perhaps the most revealing detail is something much easier to overlook. Lyle wrote Stacy a letter from his stuffed animals. The letter was signed by them, one after another, using the names he had given them: Pookie. Webster. Cookie. Froggy. Theodore. Pinky. Dyno. Woodstock. Odie. Garfield. Snoopy. Panda. Oscar. Scooby-Doo. Bugs Bunny. And many more. Think about what that means. These weren’t simply stuffed animals Lyle had bought for his girlfriend. They were characters he had given identities to over the years — animals he described as his “family.” And now Stacy was being brought into that world. She wasn’t simply receiving gifts. Through that letter, Lyle was sharing something deeply personal with her: a little world he had built around his stuffed animals long before their relationship began. And this is where I have a personal theory. Sometimes I wonder if, in Lyle’s mind, Stacy almost had to be accepted by his little family of stuffed animals. Not literally, of course. But if these animals meant as much to him as he described, writing to Stacy in their names feels almost like introducing his girlfriend to the companions who had been part of his life for years. Almost like saying: “This is Stacy. She matters to me. She belongs here too.” We can’t know whether Lyle consciously thought about it that way. This is simply how I interpret the connection between the stuffed animals he called his family and the letter he wrote to Stacy in their names. But I find that parallel incredibly moving. Lyle had spent years building a little world around his stuffed animals. And when Stacy became an important part of his life, he didn’t simply leave that world behind. He made room for her inside it. #lyle #menendez #menendezbrothers #lylemenedez
