Now every time you see a bat, you quiver in fear that it just might be…a vampire! Bats and vampires are synonymous with each other. You hardly see one with out the other. Pop culture has cemented the image of a vampire ether turning into or controlling a bat(s) thanks to works like Bram Stokes 1897 novel Dracula. But the paring is actually much older than that. in the late 15th and 16th centuries, Spanish explorers reached Central and South America. Already they had tales of the blood drinking vampire. But, to their dismay, they discovered a creature that could do the same deep in the jungles of Latin America. Later, in 1810, French naturalist Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, described it and gave it the name Desmodus rotundus. And Charles Darwin a few years later, observed it deinking the blood of a horse on his 1832 voyage! Tough dubbed Desmodus rotundus, it became commonly know as. The Vampire Bat! Out of 1300 species of bat, three are known to exclusively to drink blood. And all are commonly small, typically weighing about 1 to 1.5 ounces with a body length of 2 to 3.5 inches and an 8-inch wingspan. So, how do they pull off drinking blood at all? To start they do not suck blood. Instead, they make tiny incisions with razor-sharp teeth and lap up the flowing blood. They also don’t land on their prey. Instead, unlike a lot of bat species, they walk up on all fours to approach their prey. Another neat ability they have is that they can sense where their target is in the dark of the night, thanks to heat-sensitive nose receptors. So do we need to be afraid of being drained dry? No. For the most, Vampire Bats are harmless to humans. They commonly prefer to feed on sleeping livestock and domestic animals, such as cows, horses, pigs, and donkeys, as well as birds like chickens. They occasionally do bite humans, particularly in rural parts of Central and South America where people sleep near livestock or outdoors, but humans are not a primary choice on the menu.
