Gardner Minshew came off the bench for the Arizona Cardinals today and threw three touchdown passes. Arizona was losing 24 to 10 to the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth quarter. They won 33 to 30 in overtime. In seventh grade, Minshew and his father taught themselves Mike Leach's air raid offense and ran it in flag football in Brandon, Mississippi. College went sideways on him four separate times. He committed to Troy and left in May without playing a down. He went to Northwest Mississippi Community College, where the coach told him he probably would not start, and he won the job a week later and a junior college national championship. Then East Carolina, where he backed up, then started, then shared the job. By 2018 he had one year of eligibility left and he had already decided how it was going to end. He committed to Alabama, where he would hold a clipboard for Nick Saban for a season and then go be a coach somewhere. Then the phone rang. It was Mike Leach at Washington State, and Leach asked him if he wanted to come lead the nation in passing. He went. He led the nation in passing at 397.6 yards a game, threw for 4,776 yards and 38 touchdowns, and finished fifth in the Heisman voting. Go back to April of 2018, the night before a draft he was not in. He posted this.

"365 days to prove why my name should get called." 365 days later Jacksonville drafted him in the sixth round, 178th overall. Be straight about what has happened since. Minshew has been on the roster in Jacksonville, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Kansas City and now Arizona. He has never been the long term answer anywhere. So he got very good at the other thing. Knowing the whole playbook without taking a rep in it all week. Warming up in the third quarter of a game his team is losing badly, because somebody has to be ready. Today somebody needed him with eleven minutes left. Twenty years ago a kid in Mississippi was running Mike Leach's offense in flag football because his dad thought it looked fun. #nfl #nflnews #cardinals #azcardinals #football
